Whitby and Scarborough among top resorts
Whitby and
Scarborough are both in the top five all-time favourite UK
seaside resorts, according to new research by consumer champion
Which? Holiday.
In the independent survey of more than
4,000 members of the public, Whitby has been voted third favourite,
with Scarborough placed fifth. Both are particularly popular
with day trippers and families.
The two Yorkshire resorts have been singled
out for their scenery and proximity to the countryside, while
Scarborough's beaches also score highly.
Janet Deacon, Scarborough Borough Council’s
Tourism Manager said: “This is excellent news, especially as the
results are based on the opinions of the consumer.
“Over the last few years the public and
private sector have worked really hard and invested a great deal of
time and money to ensure our resorts remain top visitor
destinations.
“Scarborough and Whitby have so much to
offer the visitor and being close to the national park enables us
to provide a diverse and unique experience.
“The award-winning blue flag beaches, the
ever extending entertainment and event programme, the superb
attractions and award-winning restaurants in Scarborough and
Whitby, together with the continued investment taking place at both
the Scarborough Spa, Open Air Theatre and Whitby’s Pannett Park and
marina, will enable us to ensure the resorts remain at the top and
continue to attract visitors for years to come.”
Blackpool was chosen as the nation's
all-time favourite seaside resort, with Brighton following close
behind. Bournemouth is in fourth place.
Around 40 per cent of British adults took a
trip to the seaside in 2009, but this is set to increase in 2010 -
20 per cent of adults surveyed said they will be more likely to
visit the seaside in 2010 than in 2009.
Rochelle Turner, Head of Research for
Which? Holiday, said: “We know millions of Brits are planning to
holiday at home this year and it’s certainly one way to ensure you
don’t fall victim to volcanic ash.
“Resorts like Whitby and Scarborough have so much to offer, and
although nobody can guarantee good weather, you can be confident
you'll have a great time at the Great British seaside.”
